  • A local man is in critical condition following a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 57 near the West Frankfort exit Thursday afternoon, according to West Frankfort Fire Department officials.
Harvey Harris, of West Frankfort, was transported to Herrin Hospital via WFFD ambulance and then subsequently airlifted to a St. Louis  area hospital after his pickup truck struck a semi-trailer.
Harris was reportedly unconscious when West Frankfort firefighters arrived on the scene.
According to West Frankfort firefighter Jon Alexander, Harris’ vehicle left the roadway and into the median before he apparently overcorrected and struck the semi in the right lane.
The front driver side and door of the semi was damaged and the semi's front left tire was “wedged about a foot deep” into the pickup's passenger side door.
One lane of traffic was shut down while firefighters cleared the scene and was open soon after.
