A West Frankfort woman drowned early Sunday morning after crashing her car into a creek.
According to Williamson County Coroner Mike Burke, Allyson Jo Russell, 25, died before 2:54 a.m. near the intersection of Water Street and Binkley Road in Johnston City.
Burke also said that Russell was traveling northbound when she failed to negotiate a curve on Water Street and her car went into a swollen creek bed. Her car was then swept an eighth of a mile downstream before becoming submerged under 12 feet of water.
According to West Frankfort Fire Captain Ron Rains, the WFFD was called around 3:30 a.m. to assist in the search. Rains said it took a long time to find the car due to the swift current in the creek.
The Carterville Fire Department Water Rescue Team, Rend Lake Search and Rescue Team, Johnston City and Benton Fire Departments all assisted in recovering the vehicle.
The accident is under investigation by the Williamson County Coroner's Office, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office and the Johnston City Police Department.
Arrangements for Russell, a 2006 FCHS graduate, are still taking place at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort.
