A West Frankfort business suffered severe fire damage early Friday morning. Firefighters and equipment from West Frankfort, Zeigler and Benton responded to the blaze at Sandy's Flowers and Gifts on West Main Street in West Frankfort at around 1:30 a.m.
Equipment from Johnston City backed up the WF fire station as area personnel battled the blaze. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of the north and east sides of the building, as well as the back of the building.
Crews were able to put the fire out in less than 90-minutes but were on the scene for hours.
"I don't know how much the owners are going be able to salvage. The back half of it off of Main Street suffered the greatest amount of damage," said West Frankfort fire chief Wes Taylor.
No one was injured and representatives of the local department were on the scene this morning awaiting the arrival of the state fire marshall to inspect the aftermath of the blaze. Response to the call, received from the public, was quick and thorough.
Two engines from West Frankfort, two from Ziegler and Benton trucks were on hand. WFFD responder Nathan Sailliez, first on the scene, said flames were shooting out the back and smoke venting in various places. We knocked down the fire and made entrance,” he said. “We suppressed the fire in two back rooms and made our way to the attic.” It took about 45 minutes to suppress the fire. Collectively there were three chiefs on the scene and about 18 firefighters.
