Union Pacific Railroad officials announced that several crossings will be closed for periods of time this Thursday and Friday, said West Frankfort Chief of Police Jeff Tharp.

Starting Thursday, the Cleveland Street railroad crossing is expected to be closed from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Friday, the Main Street crossing is expected to be closed during the same time frame.

Tharp said his department will have detour routes in place during the closures."Because of the advance notice, our department has detours in place to keep traffic from becoming congested in these areas," said Tharp.

"Drivers should keep the times and locations of these closures in mind and choose different routes if possible."

The item was reported at the most recent city council meeting and the dates were made available to Tharp earlier this week.  West Frankfort Mayor Marion Presley said he had been contacted by Union Pacific representatives earlier this summer, informing him of the intended closures, which are to repair the railroad crossings at both sites.
