A West Frankfort man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for his role in a scheme that netted him and his wife nearly $1 million in fraudulent federal income tax returns, according to Stephen R. Wigginton, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.
David R. Childers, 38, received the sentence Wednesday in federal court in Benton. His wife, Jessica N. Childers, was sentenced in January to a nine-year prison term.
Previously, on August 11, 2011 both Childers were charged in a Conspiracy to Submit False, Fictitious, and Fraudulent Claims to the United States and Receipt of Money Stolen from the United States. Jessica Childers was also charged with Aggravated Identity Theft. Both pled guilty to the offenses with which they were charged. Evidence offered in support of the guilty pleas and sentence showed that in January 2008, Jessica Childers began electronically submitting false income tax returns to the IRS using the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers of real individuals who were deceased.
