Firefighters from the West Frankfort Fire Department were out in full force early Thursday morning, battling an intense structure fire on East Clark Street.
WFFD Chief Wes Taylor said when firefighters arrived at 508 E. Clark St at just after 5:30 a.m., they were met with violent, fully-involved structure fire.  First-responders were forced to approach the fire defensively, ensuring that flames did not spread to adjacent homes.

"The first guys on the scene did the right thing by falling back and protecting the neighboring house," said Taylor.  "The fire had already caused the roof to fall in and melted the siding on the house next to it.  We're fortunate we weren't  battling two fires."

Once the blaze was extinguished, firefighters remained on-site until utility officials could arrive and stabilize a gas leak.  All units were cleared from the scene roughly two hours after the call came in.
