The West Frankfort Fire Department responded to a mutual aid request from the West City department to assist in a blaze which destroyed an oil field in rural Franklin County early Saturday morning.
According to WFFD Chief Wes Taylor, firefighters from the West Frankfort department joined the effort to extinguish the suspicious blaze after receiving a call from the West City department at just before 5 a.m. Saturday. Taylor said his department quickly arrived on the scene to discover that four steel and two fiberglass tanks had been engulfed by violent flames reaching as high as 200 feet in the air.
Taylor related that firefighters were initially forced to keep a safe distance from the fire due to the extreme heat and dangerous bursts of flames.
Once the blaze reached a manageable state, West Frankfort firefighters assisted by providing foam to keep the flames from spreading and to subsequently extinguish the fire shortly after 7 a.m.
Taylor added that Franklin County Emergency was contacted due to the release of hazardous materials by the fire. The incident is currently under investigation by state fire marshal officials. No injuries were reported.
