President and founder Dr. Tim Morthland made the formal announcement Friday afternoon that Morthland College will implement an intercollegiate athletic program effective immediately for the 2012-13 academic year.

Johnston City native and Milligan College (Tenn.) graduate Jim Bernhardt was recently named athletic director of Morthland College.

“Athletics is a vital part of student life and is a natural step in the growth of a college. I am very pleased to announce the college is launching this venue for our students and to the region,” commented Dr. Morthland. “We have worked to establish Morthland College as an institution of academic quality. As part of the commission of athletics at the college, our board of trustees insisted that the academic rigor be upheld.”

Currently, Morthland College is planning to kick off their athletic campaign with men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, women’s basketball, women’s cross country and women’s softball for beginning in the fall of 2012. Coaches are being interviewed and will be announced when they have been appointed.

Morthland College has begun the application process to become an active member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).
