A winter storm warning is looming for northern Illinois, and the forecast calls for accumulations of up to 12 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service says the warning takes effect at 9 p.m. Monday and will continue until 4 a.m. Wednesday.

The weather service says between 6 and 12 inches of snow are expected by Tuesday night, and even more could pile up near Lake Michigan.

The forecast also is calling for strong winds, and the weather service says that could cause severe blowing and drifting snow in open areas.
