Kendrick Simelton was the lone Redbird to medal in Saturday's class 1A state track and field championships. Simelton received an eighth place medal in the triple-jump Saturday afternoon.
"Kendrick has had a great year," commented West Frankfort track and field coach Richard Glodich. "He worked hard all year and he placed at state. It's quite an accomplishment."
Simelton jumped well in the preliminaries to give him a spot in the finals. Simelton came in eighth place overall by recording a leap of 43'2.
"He has represented West Frankfort and FCHS very well," added Glodich. "He was the only Redbird to make it past the prelims, that is an accomplishment in itself.
"This is the first time Kendrick has placed," explained Glodich.
"He has qualified for three years and this was his first year to medal. I’m very proud of this young man. Hopefully, next year he can have the same success."
