Harrisburg, Ill. -

The West Frankfort Lady Redbirds capped a bust week of competition at the Harrisburg Invitational Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Lady Redbirds finished 2-2 at week long tournament and are 3-2 overall. The Lady Redbirds topped Harrisburg Saturday, 48-33. Friday night, West Frankfort defeated  Anna-Jonesboro 64-38. Last Wednesday, Carbondale got past West Frankfort 49-47.

West Frankfort girls basketball coach Matt Hampleman was pleased with his teams progress at the tournament. "Harrisburg was our fourth game in five days. I thought we came out a little bit flat but our defense kept us in the game. We played extremely well in the middle of the third quarter and stretched our lead. We also shot the ball very well," said Hampleman.
Senior Alexis McPhail paced West Frankfort offensively in the victory over the Lady Bulldogs, dropping in 13. Junior Gena Jones finished with 12 points.

West Frankfort, as a team, also shot the ball well in its victory over Anna-Jonesboro, according to Hampleman. "We did shoot well against then also and Shayly Wilce just had an awesome game for us." Wilce led West Frankfort with a game-high 19 points, including a three-pointer. The senior was also money at the charity stripe, knocking down 10 of 13 attempts. Jones and McPhail also scored in double figures, with 12 and 11, respectively.

In their narrow defeat at the hands of Carbondale, Hampleman said his squad did many things right. "We did everything but win the game," said the coach. "It was a very good team effort. Amy Bymaster gave us some quality minutes against Carbondale and also in the A-J game."
Jones led West Frankfort with 18 points in its loss to Carbondale. McPhail added 11, including a three-pointer.

Added Hampleman, "We're still trying to find our way in a couple of areas but its still early in the year. Overall, the tournament was a very good experience for us."
