A three run homerun signaled the Lady Redbird's demise Wednesday afternoon.
The 'Birds traveled to Carmi for the first round of regionals. West Frankfort played well but Hamilton County proved to be too much, as the Redbirds lost a nail biter 4-3.
"We competed the entire game," commented West Frankfort head softball coach Tim Ricci. "We were in control until they (Hamilton County) hit a three run homer. That took all of our momentum from us."
Shayly Wilce took the hill for the last time in a Redbird uniform. Wilce surrendered three earned runs on seven hits. She recorded four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
"Shayly (Wilce) pitched well," added Ricci. "She was in control of the game and the only earned runs she gave up came on that three run homer."
The Redbirds end the season with an overall record of 11-20.
Jami Gahn went 1-4 with a run and a walk. Kylie McDaniel went 1-4.
Wilce went 0-4 with a run and a walk. Erika Price went 1-4 with a run.
Christi Bromley went 1-4 with a stolen base. Amy Bymaster went 1-4.
"We hit the ball and played good defense," explained Ricci. "We had our chances to win that game, we just couldn't take advantage.
"Im proud of these girls," added Ricci. "Shannon Browning is a freshman and she stepped in and played catcher very well for us. She controlled the plate for much of the day."
