Recent FCHS grad Alicia Hartley was the lone Lady Redbird trackster to advance to the State Championship in Charleston last weekend. Hartley received an eighth place medal for her blistering time in the 400 meter run.
"I’m really happy with the accomplishments I have had this year in track," commented Hartley.
"I tried my best because I was representing FCHS and the town of West Frankfort."
"Alicia had a great showing at state," commented FCHS Athletic Director Richard Glodich. "She represented our school well. She is only the fourth Lady Redbird in our school's history to medal at the state competition."
84 teams made the trip to Charleston. An eighth place finish with that that kind of competition is something to be remembered.
"Some of these teams were unreal," added Hartley. "Every team there was extremely talented and it was an honor to compete against such great athletes."
"Once you get to the state meets the competition is so much better," explained Glodich. "We are extremely proud of her and happy to have her as a Redbird."
She recorded a time of 59.22. Hartley has  improved her personal record three or four times this season.  The State Championship was no different, as Hartley again broke her own record around the oval. 59.22 is the new FCHS record in the 400 meters.
"In the prelims I ran really well," added Hartley. "But when it was time for the finals all the girls had blazing speed. I thought I was fast, but some of these girls were really fast."
Hartley is in elite company as one of the only Lady 'Birds to medal at the state meet.
"I've had to work hard to get to this point," explained Hartley. "I practiced hard every day and my coaches wouldn't let me give up. I had to push myself to run that extra mile after practice, but it paid off."
"Alicia has had a great career at FCHS," added Glodich. "She is one of the hardest workers I've seen. She always strives to get better."
