The FCHS Boys’ Golf team competed in a triangular meet Wednesday afternoon against two of the area’s premier teams, falling to Murphysboro and Benton at Jackson County Country Club.
The Red Devils won the match with a total of 151, followed by Benton with 157. The Redbirds shot 182 as a team.
Individual scores for FCHS were: Trenton Easley, 42; Brad Bozic, 44; Kyle Avripas, 44; Ben Bishop, 52; Evan Keller, 54; Kaleb Russell.
Murphysboro’s Andrew Novara shot a 3 under par, which was one stroke off the school record.
FCHS Head Coach Mike Karoski said despite what the score may indicate, he was proud of his team’s effort against southern Illinois’ best.
“I thought we competed well,” said Karoski. “We didn’t seem intimidated and we had three kids shoot in the lower 40s, which is what we are looking for.
“Trenton Easley and Brad Bozic are starting to show some consistency and Kyle Avripas is putting some good matches together, now we just need to focus on getting a fourth score.”
Karoski went on to say that in order for his team to continue to improve, they must take the course against stiff competition and give it their all, which he felt the ‘Birds did Wednesday.
“Add Massac in with these two teams and you’re looking at the best in the southern Illinois,” said the coach. “If we can keep this up, it is only going to make us better in the long run.”
