The FCHS boys' varsity basketball squad had its hopes of a winning streak dashed Saturday night on the road at Johnston City, as the Indians rebounded from a slow start to dispatch the 'Birds, 42-30.
The Redbirds were knocking down shots early, jumping out to an 11-2 with just under three minutes left in the game's opening quarter. Junior Dylan
Vaughn scored 11 of his 13 points in the first quarter and West Frankfort seemed to have the Indians on the ropes, as the 'Birds were turning up the pressure on the defensive end of the court.
However, the lead would be short-lived. After the first quarter ended 12-6 in favor of West Frankfort, Johnston City clawed its way back into the ball game in the second frame, taking a 14-13 lead on a basket in the paint from Daniel Davison with just under four minutes before the halftime break.
When the dust settled, the Indians had put together a 12-1 scoring run that lasted the duration of the second stanza, giving the Indians an 18-13 advantage at the half.
In the third, junior guard Taylor Cash buried a three-pointer in the opening minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 18, but the Indians quickly responded with consecutive drives to the tin by Nathan Richards to put them back on top 22-18. Johnston City continued to put some distance between themselves and the "Birds, outscoring West Frankfort 13-7 in the fourth quarter to preserve a 42-30 win.
Simelton, 4 0 2 1 -13; Vaughn, 2 2 2 1 -11
