Bricen Harpool is an FCHS senior who has made an important decision about his future. Harpool has signed a letter of commitment to John A. Logan College.
Harpool will pitch and maybe play the infield. Harpool was 5-2 in his senior season at FCHS and was one of the Redbird's best hitters.
"Bricen has the work ethic to be successful in anything he does," commented West Frankfort head baseball coach Scott Samples. "He works hard every day. Whether it's in the bullpen or in the weight room. He is always trying to get better. You can't teach a quality like that."
The college game will pose some challenges for this young man. "It feels pretty good to be able to play college ball. I’m ready for the challenge of competing at the next level," commented Harpool. "It will most likely be a tough transition to the college game, but I feel Im prepared for the challenge.”
"The college game is totally different," added Samples. "Bricen has the tools to raise his level of play. The competition will no doubt be tougher, but this guys is a fighter. He will do fine."
"At John A. Logan I will probably be a relief pitcher," added Harpool. "If I had to guess I would say middle relief somewhere.
"Coach Samples always keeps a positive attitude," explained Harpool. "He doesn't get extremely mad, even when we get stomped. (Scott) Samples is always the one to calm us down, and tells  us what we did right instead of dwelling on what we did wrong."
"It was great to have chance to coach a young man like Bricen. He is so coachable and his effort is not an issue," explained Samples. "I wish him nothing but the best. I expect to see his name in the newspaper in the near future."
Bricen has had a lot of mentors and coaches over the years, but one stands out in his mind more than others.
"I have to thank George Hopkins. He has worked with me since I was a kid," explained Harpool. "George taught me the fundamentals and how to be a team player. I wouldn't be in this position without him."
