A state legislator from west-central Illinois is battling cancer.

State Rep. Rich Myers, R-Colchester, said in a statement today he will continue serving his term in office despite being recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. He said he will undergo tests in the coming weeks to determine the best treatment route.

Myers said he might miss some session days to research treatment options. Lawmakers are scheduled to wrap up their spring session in May.

"I view this as just another hurdle I must overcome," Myers said.

Myers' office in Macomb will remain open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m.

Myers has served in the legislature since 1995 and is a businessman and farmer in McDonough County. He is married and has one daughter, and he's running for re-election this fall against Democrat Earl Godt.
