State Rep. John Bradley (D-Marion) has joined forces with police officers throughout the state to prohibit municipalities from establishing ticket quotas that require officers to issue an arbitrary number of tickets, rather than reviewing incidents on a case-by-case basis.
“By requiring law enforcement officials to issue a certain number of citations, it is actually creating a more dangerous environment, as officers are working to meet the quota, rather than address other criminal activity in the community,” Bradley said.
“Many municipalities have turned tickets into an additional revenue stream and are demanding that police officers issue tickets to make sure the city is bringing in enough money. This is not fair to police officers or residents.”
House Bill 6035 prohibits counties and municipalities from instituting a policy or supporting a practice that encourages or requires law enforcement to issue a certain number of tickets within a certain period of time.
