As witnessed by last year's string of powerful storms, springtime conditions in southern Illinois can quickly drum up weather systems capable of causing extended power outages and, in turn, making portable gasoline-powered generators valuable commodities.
"The emergency power that's supplied by generators can help make power outages more tolerable," said Illinois State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis. "But homeowners need to keep in mind the risks associated with improper use of these appliances."
